Open Day still draws in the crowds
Monday, 11 August 2014
University of Adelaide Open Day is on this weekend, Sunday 17 August and, even with the massive online presence of course information and advice, prospective students and their families still flock to the campus talks, tours and displays in their thousands.
"Since our first Open Day in 1997, we've welcomed approximately 200,000 people to our campus, and every year they keep coming," says University Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic) Professor Pascale Quester.
"Along with the plethora of online information and social media engagement which is an integral part of student recruitment today, prospective students still want the opportunity to attend information sessions in person, to meet staff and students, to see the lecture theatres and study facilities, to have a taste of campus life.
"We know that the campus experience is an important part of student choice, along with the specifics of their chosen course.
"Of all the factors that impact study choices, or even whether to go to uni, Open Days are still among the most important influencers.
"Our overall engagement with Open Day is growing year on year, with more and more going to the website and watching the videos of the presentations, as well as thousands visiting our campus.
"I encourage all young people and their families to come along and hear about the unique learning environment at the University of Adelaide, including our small group discovery experience involving every student in every program."
On Sunday 17 August from 9am to 4pm at the University's North Terrace campus, there will be a range of talks, tours, displays, fun activities, cultural performances and entertainment - for the general community as well as prospective students and parents.
Find out what makes South Australian wines first-class; hear Elder Conservatorium of Music students; control a robot; investigate how much bacteria on human hands; and explore the many clubs and societies.
For those who can't attend, the most popular talks will be live streamed on the day.
This year, for the first time there will be an Instagram competition with prizes on offer for the best photos and video recording Open Day action.
