Uni explores future options for Radio Adelaide

Monday, 30 November 2015

The University of Adelaide is exploring future options for community radio station, Radio Adelaide, through a discussion paper released today.

“Radio Adelaide’s current premises on North Terrace has been sold, which has led the University to open the dialogue around the station’s future location, shape and funding,” said University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Warren Bebbington.

Earlier this year, the University commissioned expert community broadcast consultants, Kath Letch (3RRR) and Ann Tonks (6UVS), to investigate the challenges and opportunities for the station.

After comprehensive consultation, they presented five options for the station’s future, which were subsequently analysed and costed by accounting firm, Ernst & Young.

“Radio Adelaide is owned and significantly subsidised by the University of Adelaide,” said Professor Bebbington. “But like all Australian universities, Adelaide is subject to worsening financial pressures as Commonwealth support for the higher education sector contracts.

“All parts of the University are required to make savings, and we cannot exempt Radio Adelaide from the financial constraints on our core teaching and research,” he said.

A discussion paper outlining the different options for the station has been circulated to key Radio Adelaide stakeholders.

“We certainly recognise the value of Radio Adelaide as a community broadcaster. But now is the time to think through a viable future model for the station, as well as finalising a plan for a change of premises,” said Professor Bebbington.

Responses to the discussion paper are due by Friday 11 December 2015. Visit the webpage for more information.
