Adelaide students among 2016 New Colombo Plan Scholars
Tuesday, 1 December 2015
Four outstanding University of Adelaide undergraduate students have been awarded New Colombo Plan Scholarships, giving them the opportunity to live, study and work in the Indo-Pacific region in 2016 for up to 12 months.
They were among 100 students from 26 Australian universities to receive scholarships, which were announced last night by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Julie Bishop MP, and the Minister for Tourism and International Education, Senator the Hon. Richard Colbeck.
The awarded students were selected on the basis of their academic performance, community leadership and for demonstrating a proven commitment to forging a long-term relationship with the Indo-Pacific.
Charles Hamra, a Bachelor of Laws / Bachelor of International Studies student, was named the New Colombo Plan Fellow for India (the topped-ranked scholar going to India) and he’ll be studying at Jamia Millia Islamia.
Other recipients from the University of Adelaide include:
• Jessica Freund (studying a Bachelor of Laws / Bachelor of International Studies) who will be attending Peking University Law School in China;
• Megan Lock (studying a Bachelor of Teaching / Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences and Japanese) who will be attending Osaka University in Japan; and
• Ryan Cunningham (studying a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Languages) who will be attending Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The scholarships provide recipients a travel allowance of $2500, a monthly allowance of $2500, as well as further funds for health and travel insurance, and money to help them get established in their host cities.
The announcement follows the New Colombo Plan 2016 mobility round announced in July, where more than 5,450 students will study and intern in 28 locations in the Indo-Pacific.
International Law student Claire Williams was also recently awarded a Federal Government scholarship. She received a 2016 Endeavour Scholarship to undertake postgraduate studies at New York University.
