Justice is served in Adelaide photo exhibition

Wednesday, 26 October 2016

A series of striking photographic images dealing with themes of justice – from a black-and-white portrait of London bombing survivor and peace activist Gill Hicks, to photos of refugees and members of the judiciary – is now on display in a free public exhibition at the University of Adelaide.

Images of Justice, a Portrait is open to the public until Friday 11 November in the University's Nexus 10 building (corner of Pulteney St and North Tce, Adelaide).

This exhibition comprises entries in the Adelaide Law School's 2016 Photographic Competition, which challenges photographers of all experience levels to highlight issues of justice.

As well as photos from the competition, the exhibition also contains images from featured artist Mike Bowers, The Guardian Australia's photographer-at-large.

Bowers spent 20 years in the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery in Canberra and has worked for a number of leading publications including The Australian, The Age, The Bulletin, The Australian Financial Review, BRW, Time, The Daily Telegraph and The Sydney Morning Herald.

"The diversity of justice-related themes included in our photographic competition reminds us how important issues of justice are to the community, and what the concept of 'justice' means to different people," says event organiser Professor John Williams, Pro Vice-Chancellor - Research Operations and Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Adelaide.

"For example, some of the photos deal with issues of marriage equality, reconciliation, cultural awareness and acceptance, as well as the more traditional aspects of law and the legal system.

"The competition's judges have been impressed by the depth of talent on show across all three categories: student, community and professional photographers. We're also very fortunate to have several images from experienced photographer Mike Bowers on display as part of our exhibition this year," Professor Williams says.

Winners of the photographic competition will be announced on Friday 28 October, with a cash first prize of $1200 to be awarded in each category, as well as other prizes.
