TWO of South Australia's most successful entrepreneurs will be sharing their secrets on innovation, commercialisation and turning knowledge into wealth at the University of Adelaide this Saturday, May 18. Part of the Australian Innovation Festival (sponsored by the Federal Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources), the morning event will feature guest speakers Chris Beare, Founding CEO and Chairman of Radiata, and Dr Patricia Crook AO, Managing Director of Dynek Pty Ltd and President of Business SA. Hosted by the University of Adelaide's Master of Science and Technology Commercialisation program, the event is aimed at fanning the flames of innovation among South Australia's would-be entrepreneurs. "Chris Beare and Patricia Crook are two of the best examples of innovation and success in South Australia, and their lectures will be informative and inspirational to anyone considering a path in entrepreneurship," says Joanne Pimlott, Director of Innovation & Commercialisation Programs at the University of Adelaide. "We hope to show others, through Chris and Patricia's experience, what can be achieved in this State." Chris Beare's story centres on his three-year-old start-up, Radiata, which was acquired by Cisco Systems in November 2000 for $567 million dollars. Chris will also discuss technology spin-offs from public institutions, his acquisition experience, preparing for venture capital and competing against US giants. Patricia Crook will talk about how to develop an international company from South Australia, how to be export focused from the beginning, tips for technology-based companies, innovation in product development and marketing, and the role of continuous R&D.
