Uni of Adelaide applauds 2014 Australia Day Honours recipients

One of Australia's foremost labour law experts, Professor Rosemary Owens [1] from the University of Adelaide's Law School [2], has been made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in this year's Australia Day honours.

Professor Owens is an internationally regarded labour law expert who, in addition to her teaching and research at the University, sits on the Committee of Experts for the International Labour Organization (ILO), a special agency of the United Nations that promotes decent working standards and conditions throughout the world.

A graduate of the University of Adelaide in Education, Arts and Law, Professor Owens has been a staff member at the University since 1987. She was appointed Professor of Law in 2008 and was Dean of the Law School from 2008-2011.

Her AO - the highest honour awarded to a South Australian this Australia Day - is for "distinguished service to the law, particularly to legal education as an academic and administrator, to national and international employment and labour organisations, and to women".

The University's Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Warren Bebbington [3], congratulated Professor Owens on her Australia Day honour.

"Professor Owens continues to make a unique contribution to legal fairness and equity for workers both here in Australia and throughout the world," Professor Bebbington said.

"Her work is very worthy of the Australia Day honour, and it helps to highlight the world-class expertise in labour law right here at the University of Adelaide.

"On behalf of the University community, I congratulate Professor Owens for her greatly deserved award."
