New University Council member brings governance, legal and business expertise to the table

The University of Adelaide’s Council has today announced the appointment of a new member, a leader in the business and law sectors.

Juliet Brown OAM, has significant experience in business and law extending over various industries including financial services, particularly superannuation and insurance, as well as health and transport in both the public and private sectors.

She has extensive experience as an independent non-executive director, including considerable chairmanship and audit committee experience of Australian Prudential Regulation Authority regulated entities.

Ms Brown was appointed to the University’s Council following a recommendation from the Council Selection Committee. Her appointment fills a place on Council left by Kathryn Presser AM, who is retiring from Council.

She has a wealth of experience in areas such as governance, law and business which will be of great benefit in ensuring the University’s future as one of the top universities in the world,” said the University of Adelaide’s Chancellor, the Hon. Catherine Branson AC QC.

In 2021 Ms Brown was appointed as a member of the Board of the Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation which has funds under management in excess of $50 billion.

Previously she held the position of Independent Chair of Statewide Super and a predecessor fund Local Super for a total of nine years.

She was a member of the Board of the South Australian Motor Accident Commission (2004 to 2016), Chair of Board of Directors of Cancer Council SA (2011 to 2014) and board member from 2002. She is a past President and Chair of the Board of directors of the Royal Automobile Association of SA Inc, and has served as a member of the board of RAA Insurance Ltd and the Australian Automobile Association.

She is a graduate of the University of Adelaide (Bachelor of Laws) and is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Ms Brown said: “I am honoured to join the University of Adelaide Council and am looking forward to assisting in steering the University to an even brighter future.

“The University plays a pivotal role in the future of South Australia by educating the next generation of leaders to excel in their chosen fields.”

From 1999 to 2004 Ms Brown held the position of Chief Executive of Thomson Playford, (now Thomson Geer) one of South Australia's largest commercial law firms. In her five years as Chief Executive she led the firm through a period of successful development and growth.

Ms Brown has been appointed to Council for a period of two years from 1 June. She has been appointed to serve on the Council’s Finance Committee and will continue to serve on the Risk Committee which she joined in early 2018.
