The University of Adelaide's UniBar is being inducted into the South Australian Music Hall of Fame after 50 years of hosting iconic live music.

The UniBar which is located on the University’s North Terrace campus overlooking the Torrens, has had a storied history since its inception in 1972.

The University of Adelaide’s Dr Jessica Gallagher, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement) said: “The UniBar is a much-loved part of our University. It is an integral part of our student experience, where they connect, celebrate, and form lifelong memories.”

“Classic Australian bands have cut their teeth at the UniBar, such as Silverchair, Powderfinger, and You Am I, as well as international legends like Blink 182.

“Inducting the UniBar into the Hall of Fame recognises its contribution to live music culture in South Australia. It is a richly deserved accomplishment.”

UniBar is on the ground floor of Union House at the University of Adelaide. Following a revamp to make the space more modern and versatile, UniBar was nominated for Best Live Music Venue at the 2021 South Australian Music Awards. The bar booked more than 400 artists since the pandemic decimated the live music industry in March 2020, more than any other venue in the state.

On Saturday 5 November, UniBar is throwing a festival In the Day, to celebrate the induction. Some of UniBar's favourite bands and musicians, including one-off reformations, will perform at the evening event.

The line-up for the day includes The Mark of Cain, 28 Days, Motor Ace, Andrew P. Street’s Career Girls, Dan & Joel Crannitch (Pharaohs/Leader Cheetah), Dave Johnstone from Ammonia, Lazaro’s Dog, Lessie Does, Snap to Zero, DJ Driller.

Former UniBar staff will share memories in panel discussions compered by journalist David Penberthy.

Part of ticket proceeds will go directly to the South Australian Music Hall of Fame to support the important work it does in recognising the contribution to music of SA artists and venues.

In the Day will include the UniBar’s official induction with a plaque presentation by the chair of the SA Hall of Fame committee.

We'd love you to share your UniBar memories with us, please send photos to media@adelaide.edu.au
