Professors Zaiping Guo and Shizhang Qiao from the University of Adelaide’s School of Chemical Engineering have been inducted as Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science in recognition of their ground-breaking research. Professor Guo has been recognised for her work improving the efficiency of batteries, and Professor Qiao for his research in functional materials for new energy technologies.

The Academy of Science has elected Professor Zaiping Guo for her pioneering contributions to the understanding of how electrode materials and electrolytes behave, leading to the development of more powerful, longer lasting, and safer rechargeable batteries for portable devices, electric vehicles, and smart grids.

“It is a great honour and a significant milestone in my career to have been elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science,” said Professor Guo, an Australian Research Council (ARC) Australian Laureate Fellow, whose research focuses on the design and application of electrode and electrolyte materials for energy storage and conversion.

“Being elected by my peers who are leaders in my field is of particular significance to me and I look forward to working with other Fellows to further contribute to the field of energy storage research.”

Professor Shizhang Qiao, also an ARC Australian Laureate Fellow and inaugural ARC Australian Industry Laureate Fellow, focuses his research on the synthesis, characterisation, and simulation of functional materials as well as their applications in catalysis, energy storage and conversion (rechargeable batteries, hydrogen production, carbon dioxide reduction for fuels and chemicals).

“I am truly honoured to be selected as a Fellow of the Academy. This distinguished opportunity will encourage me to make further scientific contributions,” said Professor Qiao.

“In particular, I feel excited to lead my group to explore new directions in materials design and accelerate the practical application of clean energy generation and storage. I hope this will significantly benefit our society.”

“For two University of Adelaide researchers to be elected as Academy of Science Fellows in 2023 demonstrates the high level of quality research being conducted on our campus, as well as the benefits of our projects not only on the local Adelaide community, but also the rest of Australia and the wider world.”Professor Anton Middelberg, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research) at the University of Adelaide

Professor Anton Middelberg, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research) at the University of Adelaide, said: “I congratulate both Professor Guo and Professor Qiao on this achievement, which reflects their dedication to the scientific community and the outstanding impact of their research.

“For two University of Adelaide researchers to be elected as Academy of Science Fellows in 2023 demonstrates the high level of quality research being conducted on our campus, as well as the benefits of our projects not only on the local Adelaide community, but also the rest of Australia and the wider world.”

A not-for-profit organisation, the Australian Academy of Science champions, celebrates and supports excellence within Australia’s scientific community.

Twenty Fellows were announced this year, elected by their peers for ground-breaking research and impactful contributions, with the prestigious Fellowship marking them among the country’s most distinguished scientists.

Professor Guo and Professor Qiao join previously appointed Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science from the University of Adelaide including Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Peter Høj AC, Emeritus Professor Peter Langridge, Professor Timothy Hughes, and many more.

The 2023 Fellows were announced on Thursday 25 May. A full list of fellows can be found on the Australian Academy of Science website - https://www.science.org.au/fellowship.
