New investment targets better treatments for back pain

Evolution Surgical Clinical Director Kieran Ryan, Evolution Surgical CEO Jack Lancaster, University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj AC, University of Adelaide Chair of Spinal Surgery Dr Ashish Diwan and University of Adelaide Executive Dean Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences Professor Andrew Zannettino at the official signing.
Australian MedTech company Evolution Surgical will invest $2 million over the next decade in partnership with the University of Adelaide to advance research into spinal conditions such as lower back pain, scoliosis, and degenerative cervical myelopathy – the most common non-traumatic spinal cord injury in older adults.
With one in six Australians experiencing lower back pain, the funding will help drive faster progress toward better treatments and outcomes for patients.
Professor Ashish Diwan who is Chair of Spinal Surgery at the University’s School of Medicine said research in these areas is chronically underfunded and this donation has the potential to change lives.
“These spinal disorders affect millions of people of all ages both physically and mentally, costing the nation millions of dollars in lost productivity. Despite this, funding for research in this area is neglected, slowing progress and limiting treatment options for sufferers," said Professor Diwan.
“Our aim is to pioneer a cure for and improve outcomes for people affected and this generous donation is kick-starting that process.”
One of Professor Diwan’s research projects will focus on a molecule that could help recreate or repair damaged spinal discs.
“We are hoping to commence human clinical trials next year which, if successful, could lead to the manufacture of a new treatment,” said Professor Diwan.

Evolution Surgical CEO Jack Lancaster and University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj AC sign the funding agreement.
Jack Lancaster, CEO of Evolution Surgical said the investment supports the company’s mission to build a sustainable Australian medical technology ecosystem.
“I am delighted at the opportunity we have in front of us to address a major burden on our health. Evolution Surgical was founded on the belief that world-class medical technology can and should be developed here in Australia," said Mr Lancaster.
“Our partnership with the University of Adelaide is about more than a single donation, it is about building a pipeline for spinal innovation that keeps research, talent and manufacturing onshore.
“By supporting this research, we aim to accelerate discoveries that lead to better patient outcomes and strengthen Australia’s position as a global leader in MedTech.”
Mr Lancaster and University of Adelaide’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Peter Høj AC were both present at the signing ceremony, which occurred at the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace campus this afternoon.
“We are grateful for the generous support of Evolution Surgical which will help the University’s mission to transform spinal health research,” said Professor Høj.
“This donation will help drive breakthroughs in prevention and treatment, reducing human suffering and restoring independence.”
The first installment of the $2 million donation will be received this year.
