Performance, Development and Promotion Policy

OVERVIEW

The University of Adelaide aims to always be recognised internationally as a great research university and an Australian leader in research and teaching excellence. The pursuit of this aim requires the University to foster excellence in its staff and leadership. The University's commitment to staff development will assist to build this excellence, through the facilitation of learning and development; recognition and reward for performance; and building leadership capability.

The purpose of this policy is to guide the University's staff development and academic promotion practices according to its strategic priorities.

SCOPE AND APPLICATION

This policy applies to all staff. The policy must be read in conjunction with relevant legislation, the Enterprise Agreement (as amended) and with business practices and processes that collectively enhance the University's good governance and best management practice objectives.

Policy Principles

Great performance, development and academic promotion practices are based on the following principles:

1. Performance, development and promotions processes are:

1.1. inclusive, respectful of diversity and promote equitable access for staff.

1.2. informed by the University's strategic, operational, and legislative requirements.

1.3. thorough and fair.

2. Managers and staff proactively manage, support and encourage professional development in order to help staff attain their full potential in the workplace.

3. Managers provide an objective and constructive evaluation of staff progress using the University's performance framework and promotion standards.

4. Staff members are encouraged, recognised and/or rewarded for high-performance, sustained excellence and work-related achievements.

5. Academic promotions recognise sustained excellence and encourage applications from a diverse range of academic staff.

6. Staff members contribute to building an organisational culture that reflects behaviour aligned with the values and goals of the University.
