Biosecurity Training Requirements
To be considered an accredited person, in-house training must be successfully completed. This will be determined by the manager of the area of the University (approved arrangement) in which you work who ultimately has responsibility for having staff that are aware of the class requirements when handling goods subject to biosecurity control. They (or a nominated representative if they are absent) must present records of attendance for accreditation training when requested by the department.
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry will not maintain lists of accredited persons. Biosecurity industry participants (ie all persons with training and working with biosecurity material) must provide either copies of the online training accreditation certificate or attendance at accreditation training records.
The department will not approve the content of in-house training. The effectiveness of the training will be determined during an audit.
Persons who complete in-house training accreditation are only considered accredited while employed by the approved arrangement who delivered the training (it is not transferable).
In-house training must include the following biosecurity topics:
- responsibilities of accredited persons
- management of biosecurity risk (containment, treatment, disposal)
- security and isolation
- hygiene
- waste disposal, in particular rules around autoclaving
- record keeping
Training material is to be based on what accredited persons must do to ensure the approved arrangement area is compliant with the requirements of the class/es they are approved for.
Reaccreditation is now only required when specified by the department.This means there is no longer a requirement to renew your accreditation every two years.
Valid accreditation (as of Feb 2017)
If you are accredited under the approved arrangement accreditation for accredited persons (classes 1-8) course with a certificate dated February 2015 or later:
- your accreditation is still valid;
- you are also automatically accredited for classes 10, 11 and 12;
- you are required to renew only when advised by the department.
If you attended in-house accreditation training with your current employer:
- your accreditation is valid;
- you are required to renew only when advised by the department;
- your accreditation expires when you leave your current employer.
When is re-accreditation required?
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry will advise if or when reaccreditation training must be undertaken. Reaccreditation may be required as a result of:
- changes to requirements
- critical non-compliance
- failed audit
Where the department has made a change to requirements that result in accredited persons needing to undertake reaccreditation training, biosecurity industry participants will be notified and advised the date the reaccreditation training must be completed by. Biosecurity industry participants will need to provide proof the reaccreditation training has occurred by providing either copies of certificate from online training or proof of training from biosecurity industry participant (attendance record).
Where it is determined during a show cause process, or as a result of a failed audit, that reaccreditation of Accredited Persons is required, the biosecurity industry participant must provide proof of reaccreditation as part of the rectification process.
Reaccreditation can be conducted online or by participating in in-house training.
