NHMRC Application Process
NHMRC applications must be checked by Research Services well in advance of the NHMRC external deadline to receive endorsement from the University to submit.
Notification of intent (NOI)
Applicants intending to apply for NHMRC schemes are required to submit a Notification of Intent (NOI) through ResearchMaster 6 (RME6) before the deadline listed in the table below. Where no deadline is mandated for a scheme, you are still urged to complete an NOI before the scheme opens for applications.
Submitting an NOI informs Research Services and your Head of School that you intend to apply for schemes and any subsequent resources that may be requested as part of your application.
Completing the NOI may allow you access to Central Support initiatives for grant improvement (e.g. grant writers, externally funded strategists, & other specialist advice), OR special Faculty grant support initiatives (as advised by your Faculty).
Research funding request (RFR)
Between the Research Services internal NOI deadline and the external scheme application open date, an NOI is no longer required and a research funding request (RFR) e-form must be submitted instead. This allows your Head of School to sign off on your submission and, if successful, approve the establishment of the project in the School.
If based on an earlier NOI for the same application, all previous information entered will flow through to the subsequent RFR. A completed RFR also ensures that an application appears on the investigator's individual academic profile (IAP).

Step 1 - Review relevant documentation
Review funding rules, advice & instructions and peer review guidelines available for the scheme, all hosted on GrantConnect.
-
Step 2 - Create application in RGMS or Sapphire
NHMRC/MRFF are currently using two main systems for submission of grant funding applications, RGMS and Sapphire. Please check which is required under the guidelines for any particular scheme. Requirements and instructions may differ, so check the RGMS training resources and Sapphire pilot information provided by the NHMRC.
-
Step 3 - Complete research funding request form
Complete a University research funding request form in RME6. This will be processed and approved by your Head of School. This gives the University authority to endorse and submit the application to NHMRC when finalised.
-
Step 4 - Certify application in RGMS or Sapphire
By the internal deadline (1-3 weeks prior to the external deadline, depending on scheme), certify your application in the respective system (in RGMS the status will read "Submitted to RAO"). This locks the application from further editing, and notifies our office to initiate the compliance and eligibility review.
Applications provided to our office after the internal deadline will be checked as time permits.
