NHMRC Application Process
NHMRC applications must be checked by Research Services well in advance of the NHMRC external deadline to receive endorsement from the University to submit.
Research funding request (RFR)
University policy requires all grant applications involving University of Adelaide staff or titleholders, whether they are to be administered by the University of Adelaide or another institution, to be endorsed by the relevant Head of School. The process for seeking this endorsement is to complete a Research Funding Request (RFR) e-form. A completed RFR also ensures that an application appears on the investigator's individual academic profile (IAP).
Application instructions
-
Step 1 - Review relevant documentation
Review funding rules, advice & instructions and peer review guidelines available for the scheme, all hosted on GrantConnect.
-
Step 2 - Create application in Sapphire
NHMRC use the Sapphire system for submission of grant funding applications. For information on how to use Sapphire, please see the general instructions provided by the NHMRC.
-
Step 3 - Complete research funding request form
Complete a University research funding request form in RME. This will be processed and approved by your Head of School. This gives the University authority to endorse and submit the application to NHMRC when finalised.
-
Step 4 - Certify application in Sapphire
By the internal deadline (1-3 weeks prior to the external deadline, depending on scheme), certify your application in Sapphire so the status reads "Submitted to RAO". This locks the application from further editing, and notifies our office to initiate the compliance and eligibility review. We can return your application to you if changes are required. We will not submit to NHMRC until you give us permission to do so.
Applications provided to our office after the internal deadline will be checked as time permits.

Peer Review
If you are applying for NHMRC grants, the NHMRC requests that you consider nominating to participate in the peer review process. Peer review self-nominations can be made via the Forms page in your Sapphire account. Further information how to self-nominate can be found in this video tutorial from the NHMRC and information on the peer review process is available on the NHMRC website.
