  • 3D Printing - Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS)

    3D printing is key to generate ventilator and face mask components as supply chains become disrupted. The University’s facilities and workshops can rapidly design and produce interim solutions that the health sector might require urgently, e.g. ventilator components or whole ventilators and face shields.  The University has resources that are unique and which could be readily refocussed on addressing critical needs.  We have a significant number of 3D printers, together with the required technical staff to support these operations. 

    We welcome contact from health industries and service providers to understand the nature of the critical shortages in our supply chains and to guide efficient movement through the development, regulatory and testing stages.

  • Adelaide Health Technology Assessment

    Adelaide Health Technology Assessment (AHTA) undertakes comprehensive evidence-based assessments of health technology and interventions to inform policy and practice.

    AHTA work closely with the federal health department, and those in each state, assessing the suitability of health interventions, technologies and services for public funding by the health system. Highly detailed and evidence-based, our assessments consider four key factors: safety, efficacy, cost-effectiveness and ethics.

    AHTA also has significant health data, statistics and IT capabilities, enabling us to offer a full range of related services that includes:

    • health care evaluation to inform policymakers as to which health care practices are safe, effective and good value for money
    • critique of industry submissions seeking public funding of medicines
    • assessment of new and emerging technologies
    • review of services provided on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) to ensure they’re safe, effective and appropriately used, and represent value for money
    • methodological research
    • development of clinical practice guidelines
    • study design and analysis services to enhance the handling and quality of research data informing clinical regulatory and reimbursement decision-making
    • creation of web-based information systems for small-to-large-scale research projects
    • creation of databases for complex datasets.

  • Adelaide Proteomics Centre (APC)

    The Adelaide Proteomics Centre (APC) facility provides a large range of established techniques for identifying proteins, quantifying changes in protein expression levels, and characterising post-translational modifications.

    The APC is equipped to provide expert services in mass spectrometry based protein identification, quantitation, characterisation of post-translational modifications, such as glycosylation and phosphorylation.

    We also provide expert 2D DIGE characterisation of protein expression, N-terminal sequencing, and MALDI imaging mass spectrometry.

    We can offer standard and custom services for proteomics, high throughput screening and quality control of small molecules to researchers and industry.

  • Animal model testing new ventilator designs

    Wide experience in lung studies in animal models (mice, rats, ferret, sheep, pig, marmosets).

    Offering highly sensitive X-ray velocimetry FUNCTIONAL assessment of lung health (regional, detailed, throughout the breath cycle - 4Dx.com) from mice to large animals (< 45 Kg).

    Immediate testing ability in pigs of all sizes relevant to humans; currently to 50 Kg.

  • Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) 

    Machine learning underpins the business models of the largest corporations and has the potential to deliver massive, social, economic and environmental benefits. Our world-class research strengths lie in machine learning and the methods that support this; artificial intelligence, computer vision and deep learning.

    The Medical Machine Learning node involves the development of new algorithms and models which can then interpret medical data and improve clinical diagnosis and prognosis.

    Medical machine learning focuses on how computers learn from medical data, and is at the intersection of statistics, computer science and medicine. The marriage between the different fields is driven by the unique computational challenges of building statistical models from massive data sets, which can include billions or trillions of data points. Using these datasets, we can not only learn those tasks that healthcare professionals can already do well, but also learning those where physicians have had only limited success. 

    Medical machine learning algorithms are likely to comprehend an image or a complex medical dataset as well as humans and potentially lead to improved or new diagnoses. This is driven by the fact that many current systems assume that each condition exists in isolation and is identifiable in one data source. We believe that most conditions are only visible by bringing together multiple sources of information or specific patterns in this information.

  • Clinical Research Facility

    The University of Adelaide’s Clinical Research Facility is a modern, controlled and secure multi-use research space in the heart of the BioMed City precinct.

    The purpose-built facility offers a self-contained, flexible and safe environment to conduct commercial clinical trials and deliver high quality care for study participants.

    Our expertise span a wide range of specialties and therapeutic areas, including gastroenterology, nutrition, endocrinology, pain, biological psychiatry and orthopaedics, with extensive experience in drug development and proof-of-concept.

    The Clinical Research Facility is located on level 4 of the University of Adelaide’s state-of-the-art Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences building, situated alongside the Royal Adelaide Hospital, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute and the University’s medical and nursing schools.

  • COVID-19 Patient Database

    COVID-19 Patient Database Logo

    A collection of data sets made freely available to public health and policy researchers to extract insights for combatting the COVID-19 pandemic. The dataset is a pro-bono, cross-industry collaboration. Until now, researchers and policy-makers seeking to answer questions about the pandemic could only do research on fragmented data sets (such as the data set from a particular hospital), or to conduct long, prospective clinical trials, which makes it difficult to rapidly answer questions about the epidemiology and treatment of the disease. The COVID-19 research database is a consortium of institutions pooling their de-identified and limited pandemic-related data to allow researchers to more rapidly conduct studies at a large scale.

  • Grant Accelerator Team

    The Grant Accelerator Team (GAT) provides support to the University’s research community for high-impact research.

    Adelaide Microscopy
    Adelaide Microscopy is a facility funded by the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) and offers access to a broad range of technologically advanced instrumentation for microscopy and microanalysis.

    Histology Laboratory
    Adelaide Medical School offers histology services at competitive rates for both internal and external clients. Services include tissue preparation, embedding, sectioning, slide mounting, routine and special staining.

    Membrane Transporter Expression Facility
    The MTEF enables expression of genes (plant or animal) in a cell system that can be robotically screened for various membrane transport activities and has applications in drug discovery and protein engineering.
