2021 Lloyd Cox Memorial Lecture - Prof Ingrid Scheffer (ONLINE)

This lecture series features international research and policy leaders tackling grand challenges in early life health.

We are delighted to announce that Professor Ingrid Scheffer AO from the Epilepsy Research Centre, The University of Melbourne, will present this year's lecture on:

Solving the hidden genetics of the epilepsies

Laureate Professor Ingrid Scheffer AO MBBS PhD FRACP FAES FAA FRS PresAHMS is a physician-scientist whose work as a paediatric neurologist and epileptologist at the University of Melbourne and the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health has led the field of epilepsy genetics over more than 25 years, in collaboration with Professor Samuel Berkovic and molecular geneticists. This resulted in identification of the first epilepsy gene and many more genes subsequently.

Professor Scheffer has defined many novel epilepsy syndromes and refined the phenotypic spectrum of many others, and her major interests are in the genetics of the epilepsies, epilepsy syndromology and classification, and translational research. Professor Scheffer collaborates on research on the genetics of speech and language disorders, autism spectrum disorders, cortical malformations and intellectual disability.

She led the first major reclassification of the epilepsies in 3 decades, published in 2017, for the International League Against Epilepsy. In 2014, Professor Scheffer was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and was a co-recipient of the 2014 Prime Minister’s Prize for Science. In 2018 she was elected to the Royal Society (London) and in 2019 was elected as President of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
