B-I.
Collect and Record Required Information / Data Using a Prescribed Methodology from a Prescribed Source in which the Information / Data is Clearly Evident.
Just as a lecturer or tutor prescribes the starting point of closed inquiries (see A1), so the methods for collecting and recording required information and data are provided to students at level I. Students working at Level I of ‘collect and record’ require a high degree of structure and guidance, possibly due to a lack of experience in the discipline of concern, and so a lack of familiarity of processes associated with inquiry in that discipline. For example, students' literature searches or experimentation require structured procedures to follow and the guidance of lecturers, tutors or demonstrators.
It is interesting to note that many literature-based assessments seem to be provided at level III in many years of university study, whereas a significant proportion of students may require the structure and guidance of Level I or Level II inquiry. In contrast, much laboratory research is at Level I or Level II, and does not provide students opportunities for working at higher levels of autonomy.
