Professor Jose Polo, Program Lead, Cancer Epigenetics, SAiGENCI and Director, Adelaide Centre for Epigenetics.

SAiGENCI are proud to announce Professor Jose Polo has been elected as Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS).

Professor Polo is a biochemist and stem-cell biologist whose discoveries have reshaped understanding of cellular reprogramming — the process by which one cell type can be converted into another.  By integrating advanced cell-culture, genomic, and computational methods, he has driven global innovation in reprogramming and regenerative biology.  As Program Lead, Cancer Epigenetics at SAiGENCI and Director of the Adelaide Centre for Epigenetics, he continues to lead internationally at the forefront of stem-cell and molecular research, advancing knowledge with direct implications for human health and disease modelling.

Election to the Academy is one of the highest honours in Australian health and medical sciences.  Fellows are elected by their peers for their exceptional contributions to the advancement of knowledge, the translation of research into improved health outcomes and their commitment to mentoring the next generation of researchers and clinicians.

Fellows were formally inducted at the Academy's 2025 Annual Meeting and Gala Dinner in Canberra on Wednesday 29 October.
