I love March

Forest trail in autumn

Of all the months on the calendar, I love March the most.

And no, it’s not entirely because it’s my birthday month. There are a number of other reasons why I love it so much. The first one is the weather. Not only are we welcoming a new month but we are also witnessing the changing of seasons from the hot and dry summer to a (hopefully) breezy and cool autumn.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot to love about summer – clear blue skies, warm days, sipping on Macca’s $1 frozen Fanta, trips to the beach, sundresses, putting away our textbooks for 3 months and until recently, some of us have been lucky enough to be able to travel the world and visit family. But there’s just something so comforting about the occasional cloudy skies, falling leaves and cardigans.

While the trees are turning brown, South Australia’s art scene blooms in March and if you know me, you’d know that I’m a lover of the arts. A lot of things are happening this month from Fringe to Adelaide Festival to Writers’ Week and of course, WOMADelaide! They call it Mad March for a reason.

It’s probably the most happening month of the year with an abundance of performances to watch, activities to do and food to eat. My favourite memory from Adelaide Festival was watching Fangirls the musical twice – that’s how much I loved (or shall I say, fangirled over *wink* *wink*) it.

I’ve also come to realise over these past few years how mellow March actually is as compared to the other months. Think about it – we’re not scrambling to write down our resolutions for the new year as we do in January, we’re not cramming our study materials and busy writing research essays like we’d do in June and October and there’s no need to stress out over gift-giving because festivities are still so far away (unless you’re the type to prepare months in advance).

After spending months in the heat, I can’t wait to wrap myself up in a sweater and catch some Fringe shows with my friends on the weekends. Oh, and also turn 21!
