Biography/ Background

Professor John Cheung is Head of Wind Engineering Research Group at the School of Mechanical Engineering. His research interests focus on Bluff Body Aerodynamics with particular expertise on wind tunnel testing and evaluation of wind loads and wind effects on buildings and structures. He has joined the University of Adelaide after 25 years as an academic staff member engaged in research, testing and consulting at Monash University. He previously also worked for MEL Consultants Pty Ltd in Melbourne and reached the position of Director in the Company.

John spent his industrial apprenticeship at BHP Newcastle Iron and Steel Works and studied at the University of Newcastle part-time, achieving first class honours in the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) in 1978. He was awarded his PhD at Monash University in 1984 with the thesis entitled 'Effect of Turbulence on the Aerodynamics & Response of a Circular Structure in Wind Flow'.

Professor Cheung has published many peer-reviewed papers on his research and co-authored many proprietary consultancy reports. He was the Chairman of the Australasian Wind Engineering Society (1998-2007) and the Chairman of the 12th International Conference on Wind Engineering in 2007. He is currently a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and listed on the National Professional Engineers Register.
