Mr Michael Stead
  • Biography/ Background

I am an applied ecologist and professional scientist with 13 years of formal experience. I have worked extensively with the arid and semi-arid vegetation of south and central Australia. Much of this work has focussed on habitat resource dynamics and herbivore interactions. Over the past few years I have accrued more than 300 hours of aerial surveying experience with large ungulates (buffalo, deer, goats & camels) and large to medium-sized macropods (kangaroo & rock wallabies).

My post-graduate studies at the University of Adelaide are examining the environmental drivers of eucalypt (Angophora, Corymbia and Eucalyptus) richness patterns in Australia. This group incorporates more than 700 species.

My research expertise and interests extend to ecological modelling, landscape ecology adn restoration, conservation planning, wildlife and pest management, biological survey and assessment techniques, and climate change.

As of September 2015, I am the President of the Nature Consevation Society of South Australia. I also volunteer some of my spare time to coordinate a number of ecological restoration sites in the Adelaide Hills.
