Biography/ Background

Pi-Shen Seet is Senior Lecturer in Management at the Business School, University of Adelaide.  He joined the Business School in 2005 after completing a PhD at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge. He has researched and taught entrepreneurship, organizational behaviour, marketing and strategy on undergraduate and post-graduate courses at the University of Cambridge. He has also conducted training for senior officers at the Singapore Command and Staff College and was a visiting lecturer on the Graduate Diploma Technopreneurship & Innovation Programme conducted jointly by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore and the University of Washington, USA. He has completed programs with the Singapore Civil Service College and National University of Singapore (NUS).

Before becoming an academic, Pi-Shen spent more than 13 years as an Army officer in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) in various challenging command and staff appointments. This included senior appointments with responsibilities to integrate strategies, training and systems across operational planning, intelligence, manpower, and logistics areas. He has undergone courses with the New Zealand and Australian Defence Forces and has completed a Master of Defence Studies and staff college training with the Australian Army Command and Staff College. More recently, he was the lead Project Officer in the NTU Business Process Review and Transformation and has also consulted on UK Higher Education Innovation Fund projects for the London School of Economics, the Library House, and Cambridge University's Institute of Manufacturing.

He currently teaches on the Adelaide MBA programme in Entrepreneurship, Managing Contemporary Organisations (Organisation Behaviour) and Fundamentals of Leadership. He is also lecturer-in-charge of the Adelaide Master of Commerce course in Strategic Compensation Management.

His research interests are in New venture creation, Corporate Innovation, Social Entrepreneurship, Creative Cultures.

He enjoys cycling, swimming, sailing, running, tennis, tinkering on DIY computer system and taking long walks with his wife, son and twin daughters.

Teaching Interests

Pi-Shen teaches on the following Adelaide MBA Courses: Entrepreneurship, Managing Contemporary Organisations, Fundamentals of Leadership. He is also lecturer-in-charge on the Adelaide Master of Commerce course, Strategic Compensation Management.  He has been awarded The Scott Henderson Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching by the Business School, University of Adelaide.  More recently, he was nominated by the Faculty of the Professions for the inaugural 2009 University of Adelaide Excellence in Education Awards ( http://www.adelaide.edu.au/pvclq/excellence/).

Research Interests

His current research and consulting interests include exploring how entrepreneurs and managers overcome leadership, cultural, institutional, and commercial dilemmas as they seek to grow their new ventures or transform their existing organisations. He has won awards for his publications on the interface between technology, military policy and commercial strategy and technology, interest areas that he picked up while attending the Australian Army Command and Staff College. He is currently supervising 3 PhD students who are looking into the phenomena of strategy, culture and paradoxes in fast growing enterprises. He has recently been successful, winning funding from CPA Australia as part of its competitive Small Business Research Grant scheme. Professional Interests

Pi-Shen is especially active in helping and consulting start-ups and SMEs with business planning and development. As leader of the winning team in the 2003 A.T. Kearney-Judge Business School business plan competition, he continues to advice potential managers and entrepreneurs on new venture creation strategies. In 2007, he was business mentor to student business plan teams that reached the semi-finals and finals of the University of Adelaide's Entrepreneurs'Challenge competition (http://www.adelaide.edu.au/echallenge/). Pi-Shen has also helped to start up a science education consultancy that focuses on developing science education programs for children as well as creative teaching and life science education courses for professional educators.
