Dr Sabine Rossbach
Biography/ Background
I am a scholar & artist. From my earliest years I have regarded myself as a creative artist. I lay emphasis on this fact, even though later life has led me to take up a university career. The university has enabled me, after all, to write the books (albeit not novels) I wanted to write, and to develop my talents as a painter - some of my drip paintings were exhibited in north Italian galleries in 2004 and 2006. And it has given me time to indulge my enthusiasm for theater, music and cinema, as well as my lifelong passion for museums - even if the objects of my interest have sometimes involved me in long journeys. Throughout my university career I have focused on both research and teaching. I have mainly worked in the field of European cultural studies, specializing in writing, painting, architecture, sculpture and film from 16th to 20th century England and America, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. I am also strongly committed to interdisciplinary studies, above all to the interdependence of the arts (i.e. literature / the fine arts / film / dance / theater) as well as the interface between science and the humanities. My teaching life has been mainly spent in Germany, Italy and Australia, with visiting professorships in South Africa and the U.S.A. I also spent some months in Mexico City, researching Diego Rivera. Since August 2006 I have mainly worked at the University of Adelaide. For nearly fifteen years I have taught at various European and overseas universities, using German (my mother tongue), as well as my fluent English and Italian, as medium of communication. I have taught both undergraduates and postgraduates, above all in courses on European cultural history. I have also supervised a number of PhD theses. My work in Adelaide has familiarized me with the problems of teaching mixed classes with students from very diverse cultural backgrounds. Far from being confined to Australian scholars, the research cooperations I am currently directing have a highly international profile. Moreover their membership is drawn not only from the humanities (including literary scholars, art historians, historians, philosophers and sociologists) but also from disciplines as diverse as economics, medicine, mathematics and engineering.
Individual current research projects:
- "Robots / Cyborgs / Replicants, or: a Cultural History of the Artificial Human" - a joint humanities, medical and engineering project with international cooperation, involving the participation of the University of Adelaide's School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
- "Arts and Sciences" - cooperation since 2004 in the establishment of an international research centre for the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences at the University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany) - a Volkswagen Foundation initiative earmarked for a Lichtenberg professorship.
- In preparation: German Film Festival in Adelaide (Sept./Oct. 2008), dedicated to Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Sponsors: German Consulate Generale of Germany in Australia, Goethe-Institute (Melbourne) and - hopefully - the University of Adelaide.
- In preparation: an international Conference on "Collective Creativity" in cooperation with the University of New South Wales, the Humboldt-University of Berlin (Germany) and the Goethe-Institute, Sydney (coming up in July 2009).
