PHCRED Unit

In 2000, the Australian Commonwealth government introduced the Primary Health Care Research Evaluation and Development (PHCRED) program. This provided funding for University Departments of General Practice and Rural Health throughout Australia to develop the capacity of the primary health care sector to conduct research and implement research findings in clinical practice.

The PHCRED program has become a core activity of The Discipline of General Practice (DGP) at University of Adelaide, with a variety of activities being undertaken. A PHCRED Advisory Committee consisting of representatives from a broad range of primary health care disciplines provides advice, and acts as a recruitment and dissemination avenue for PHCRED opportunities and results.

MEDIC-GP and Data Analysis Unit

General practice in Australia presents a unique opportunity for clinical research. In particular, Australia has the advantages of offering consistency in healthcare standards, unrestricted practice and good national data sets for external validation. Data from computerised general practices allows investigation of wide-ranging research questions from a longitudinal perspective. Electronic medical record databases have wide-ranging research applications which are undertaken within the Data Analysis Unit.
