Graduate Certificate in Grief and Palliative Care Counselling

Bereavement

A fundamental, theoretical and evidence-based framework for best practice care and intervention in situations of loss, grief and bereavement relevant to counsellors.

Loss and Grief

An overview of the paradigm of loss and grief, with a focus grief resulting from selected specific losses other than death.

Issues in Death and Dying

The physiological, psychological and spiritual aspects of dying, in the context of hospice, home-based and hospital palliative care. Legal and ethical issues relevant to death and dying are presented.

Supervised Field Education

This course involves a minimum of forty hours, spent either in the student’s own work place, or in an appropriate agency, organisation or institution, as negotiated by the student The object of this course is to become familiar with the delivery of local specific counselling services, and may include counselling where appropriate.

Grief Counselling I

An introduction to the practice of grief counselling. Basic counselling skills are developed or reviewed and consolidated, and the importance of the self-aware counsellor in successful therapeutic interaction is stressed.

Grief Counselling II

Theoretical aspects of grief models are applied to practical counselling approaches, allowing students to explore appropriate responses to grieving clients and patients, in the context of bereavement, palliative care and situations of loss and crisis.

Grief Counselling III

Students are encouraged to integrate theoretical aspects of grief models and practical counselling approaches with their own personal and professional orientation, and to apply their learning to the requirements of their specific work practice.

Graduate Diploma in Grief and Palliative Care Counselling

Grief and Spirituality

This course recognises the importance of spiritual issues in counselling those experiencing grief. Selected relevant spiritual traditions will provide a framework for examining the incorporation of spiritual dimensions into clinical practice.

Grief Studies

An opportunity for the exploration of various specialised areas of grief. For information regarding the topic for 2004, please contact the Department of General Practice.

Research Design and Methodology

This course is designed to provide students with a broad introduction to research process and methods, with particular reference to issues pertaining to researching questions within the health care system.

Advanced Grief Counselling IA

This course provides an opportunity for students to receive supervision of their current and ongoing work with clients.

Advanced Grief Counselling IB

This course provides an opportunity for students to receive supervision of their current and ongoing work with clients.

Advanced Grief Counselling II

Students will be introduced to one practical therapeutic modality (for example cognitive behavioural therapy) with a specific focus on the philosophy, practice and techniques and its application to grief and loss. A supervised Practicum is included.

Advanced Grief Counselling III

Students will be introduced to one practical therapeutic modality (for example a spiritual approach) with a specific focus on the philosophy, practice and techniques and its application to grief and loss. A supervised Practicum is included.

MGPCC Dissertation (full time)

The dissertation is the final requirement of the MGPCC and should therefore reflect what the student has learned from the core and elective course work in the program.

MGPCR thesis (full or part time)
