Welcome to the Health Sciences Visiting Scholars Site!

2008 PhD Scholarship Flyer (pdf 298kB) for entry in 2009 

We will sponsor students residing outside South Australia to visit the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) between 20 and 24 July 2008 to learn about our PhD programs.

Visits to the Faculty of Health Sciences can be combined with visits to the School of Molecular & Biomedical Science.

Visiting scholars will receive:

  • Return airfare to Adelaide from an Australian or New Zealand capital city
  • Up to 4 nights accommodation in Adelaide
  • Attendance at the Faculty's Postgraduate Research Expo and information sessions between 21-23 July to include: 
    o   Tours of the Faculty 
    o   Information about the University of Adelaide and PhD scholarship opportunities
    o   Information about the Faculty's PhD programs and support for PhD students
    o   Laboratory visits and discussion of research opportunities with potential supervisors offering PhD projects in areas of interest
    o   Meetings with current PhD students.

Visiting scholars are eligible for University and Faculty postgraduate scholarships, which provide a tax free income of $20,007 (in 2008) for up to 3 years of PhD study. For scholarship information click here. For information about admission to a PhD program in the Faculty, click here.

Visiting scholars who are awarded an Australian Postgraduate Award (or equivalent full scholarship) and subsequently enrol for a PhD in our Faculty will receive an initial research support allowance of up to $3,000 from the Faculty, in addition to any relocation allowance attached to their scholarship.

PhD students in the Faculty are eligible to apply for Postgraduate Travel Fellowships (PGTF) to present at international conferences in their second/third year of candidature. See here (rtf 31kB) for the 2008 PGTF guidelines.

You are invited to attend our Postgraduate Research Expo

The Faculty of Health Sciences Postgraduate Research Expo will be held on 22 July.  In the morning PhD students from all Schools in the Faculty will present their research findings in the form of posters.  There will be an opportunity in the afternoon for selected PhD students from UoA and Faculty Research Centres to deliver an oral presentation.  The best poster prizes and best oral presentation prize will be awarded in the afternoon session followed by wine and finger food.

Eligibility for the Visiting Scholars scheme

You must:
1.      be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or Australian permanent resident, residing outside of South Australia.
2.      be eligible to apply for an Australian Postgraduate Award PhD scholarship for 2009.
3.      hold (or expect to complete in 2008) a four-year Australian university Honours degree (first or second class Honours), or the equivalent from an approved overseas university. A research Masters degree may also be acceptable.

Visiting scholars will be selected, based on:

  • Academic excellence
  • Research interests and experience.
