MUSPMACT 2611 - Popular Music Style Studies 2A

Style Studies surveys the history of contemporary popular music styles as mediated through musical trends and recording technologies and covers genres of Contemporary Popular Music from Tin Pan Alley to the present day. Focusing on the influential musicians, composers and producers and the creative philosophies that played an integral role in the development of styles of the era, the style, approach and realised sound will be analysed and contextualised through the use of transcriptions and audio and film recordings. The course is disposed as a series of Seminars and Tutorials. Seminars focus on musical trends, while Tutorial 1 is based on required weekly readings, and Tutorial 2 on listening and musical analysis.
