Careers in focus
What research or activities did you do to build your industry knowledge and connections?
"Networking, and networking. I am constantly connecting with new individuals I meet along the way in my career. In terms of industry knowledge, I found a lot of the practical subjects I did at Uni to be useful – the assignments and research I did for those were invaluable, and I still find myself referring to them."
What is your most memorable experience from university?
"I never gave up putting in 100%, because failure wasn't an option. It wasn't just me telling myself this over and over that got me to graduation day. It was the incredible resources the uni has to offer. In simple terms they provided everything I needed to not fail at my studies! Once I realised this it made me feel more and more confident that if any part of the course or any subject became challenging or daunting, there was always someone to talk to."
What steps did you take at University to build your skills and experiences?
"A great lesson from one of my course coordinators in chemical engineering was 'never be the smartest person in the room', because if there's someone smarter than you then you'll always be pushing yourself to get to where they are. Some of my friends from chemical engineering are leagues beyond my level of intelligence, so it was really good to just be around them and learn from them to build up my skills."
Do you have any advice for someone looking to follow a similar path as you?
"My advice to current students is to definitely get involved with the internship program with the university and seek out those opportunities. Consider attending conferences on topics that interest you. Many not-for-profits need volunteers which provides an opportunity for you to get a feel for an organisation and know when jobs are becoming available. You never know which of these experiences might allow you to meet the person who will give you a job or be your reference."
What did your studies teach you?
"Having worked across a range of fields from geophysics to mathematics, to innovation in new media, my studies helped give me the confidence and business skills to take the plunge and go into business with two other Adelaide MBA graduates. To this day Y Natural still remains true to our original vision of a business that is ethical and respectful of our planet, with a world class organic and cruelty free range that is truly beneficial for skin and well-being."
