Young chess players from around Australia, and two from overseas, have converged on Adelaide for the inaugural University Open Chess Tournament, being held this weekend (7-8 July). The tournament is part of the Australian Chess Federation's grand prix circuit of events that are held throughout Australia. Organised by the chess clubs of Adelaide University and Flinders University, the tournament has attracted some very strong players. The top seed is Trevor Tao, who represented Australia at the 1994 Chess Olympiad. New Zealand Champion Scott Wastney is the tournament's second seed, while other contenders include Ronald Scott from New South Wales, South Australia State Champion and Correspondence Class International Master Srbo Zaric, and former State Champions Song Yang and Kevin Sheldrick. Among the female players is the Asian Under 16 Girls Champion, Thu Giang Nguyen from Vietnam, and Australia's top female player, Women's International Master Ngan Koshnitsky. The tournament also boasts a wide range of other local talent. WHERE: "The Kaf", University of SA, City East Campus, (corner of Frome and North Terrace) | |
