Who are South Australia's best new animators?

South Australians with dreams of making their big break in the film, TV, visual effects or games industries have the chance to be recognised in this year's South Australian Short Animation Festival Awards at the University of Adelaide.

The awards provide hopeful animators with the opportunity to have their work judged and viewed by members of industry, and enable the public to witness the talents of some of the State's best emerging animators.

As part of the awards, applicants must construct a 30-second commercial for their short animated movie, as well as the movie itself (maximum of 3.5 minutes). A range of cash prizes is on offer.

Entries for the awards are currently open, with part one of the entry process (the 30-second commercial) closing on Monday 2 June. Part two (the short animated movie) closes on Tuesday 10 June.

The event culminates in a public screening and awards presentation night on Thursday 19 June at the University of Adelaide's Flentje Theatre, Architecture building, North Terrace Campus.

Sponsored by leading industry and education bodies - including the University of Adelaide - the awards help to unearth many new animators, such as last year's winner of Best Animation, Masters in Digital Media [1] student Christina Erdos.

"Digital media production in South Australia has grown substantially in recent years," says the Director of the Masters in Digital Media Program at the University of Adelaide, Dr Dean Bruton.

"The University of Adelaide's Masters in Digital Media program has become a key centre for animation and digital media production in the State and is helping to provide talented new animators to industry. Our post-professional Master of Design in Digital Media course is constantly expanding opportunities for film and effects production, with many short digital animated films made each year in our state-of-the-art production suite by artists, architects and designers.

"The SA Short Animation Festival Awards help to celebrate the vital and exciting developments in the SA film, animation and games industry, and they recognise the integral role of creativity and innovation in the digital media production process," says Dr Bruton.

"We are pleased to see the rapid growth of industry support for the awards this year."

The awards are organised by the Adelaide Chapter [4] of ACM SIGGRAPH [5] (Association of Computer Machinery: Special Interest Group - Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques).

The Master of Design in Digital Media is run within the University of Adelaide's School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design [6].
