Planning and Analytics support strategic planning and monitors University performance by the provision of reporting, data, analytics and survey capabilities enable the achievement of the teaching and research objectives by:
- Identifying, interpreting and analysing data to advise policy, decision-making, strategy and business opportunities
- Facilitating the development of strategic and operational business plans
- Producing the Annual Performance Reports and other reporting outputs on demand
- Coordinating statutory reporting obligations
- Supporting load management, budget and forecast processes
- Developing and supporting enterprise scale data and analytics solutions including interactive dashboards and visualisations
- Administering student experience surveys.

Meet our Chief Data and Analytics Officer
Dan McHolm is the Chief Data and Analytics Officer in Planning and Analytics at the University of Adelaide, responsible for leading the University to become an information driven organisation.
Planning and Analytics is comprised of Planning, Data and Analytics and Performance Reporting.
Dan is a veteran University of Adelaide staff member commencing with the institution in 1991. Having filled a number of roles across the University ranging from Associate Lecturer, Research Officer and Teaching Laboratory Manager in the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology to a range of central roles in academic and research portfolios and finally to the central planning function.
He has variously worked in and led the University’s planning and analytics function for the last 15 years.
The P&A Branch is organised into three functional areas:
Planning
The Planning team provides executive support to the University Planning and Budgeting Committee (PBC) and the Program Portfolio Committee (PPC). This includes the annual and incidental process of determining and approving University program tuition fees.
Data and analytics
The Data and Analytics unit provisions reporting and analytic applications to university wide staff and is comprised of the Data Warehouse team and Analytic Applications team. Services are in the form of professional developed reports, dashboards and self-service environments interacting with data prepared in the University’s central data warehouse. The IBM Cognos Analytics , IBM Planning Analytics and Microsoft Power BI technology platforms are supported by this unit.
Performance reporting
The Analysis, Service and Engagement team provides enabling services and resource capabilities to support the University’s teaching and research objectives and activities through the provision of data, information and analysis. Subject areas supported by the Performance Reporting team include surveys (SELT & QILT), Student Lifecycle (admissions, enrolments, load setting and completions), Research Reporting, Staff Reporting, Performance Reporting, Rankings and Management Organisational Structure.
