Computer Science student Georgia Mason is at Adelaide Zoo teaching computers to understand orangutan facial expressions.
The AI system has hit 88% accuracy in reading the orangutans' moods. That’s better than most humans trying to figure out if their housemate is passive-aggressive about the dishes again.
This tech enhances how zookeepers work. Instead of playing guessing games about whether the orangutans are having a good day, keepers now get real-time emotional intel that helps them create personalised care plans.
The future roadmap is even more ambitious – they're working on an app that will ping keepers when an orangutan needs some TLC, plus expanding the system to work with other species.
