If you plan to work overseas in a professional role, you may need to register with a local professional body in that country, state or province.

Not all professions or countries require registration but it’s common in health-related fields. It’s your responsibility to research what’s needed for your profession and location.

Once you know the requirements, Adelaide University can help with completing and verifying your application. This process can take up to six weeks, so make sure to plan ahead and allow extra time for processing by the registration body.

Applying for overseas professional registration

To start your overseas professional registration, contact the registration provider in the country where you plan to work and request their application form.

Once you have the form, submit it along with all required documents. A fee of $125 applies. Preparing your documents can take up to six weeks.

This service is for Adelaide University graduates applying for professional registration outside Australia.

Once you submit your completed application, Adelaide University will prepare the documents listed in your form.

Some overseas registration providers require the University to send your application directly. If so, you’ll need to provide detailed information and documents. Your application will be posted to the provider by registered mail, and you’ll receive a copy for your records.

Other providers may ask you to submit the application yourself. In that case, the University will give you the completed documents and a copy.

As industry standards and requirements vary from country to country (and states/provinces in some instances, for example the United States of America), each country (or state/province) has their own professional registration provider. This means that if you want to work overseas, you may need to register with the relevant professional registration provider in the country/state/province you want to work in. This is referred to as overseas professional registration.

Please note that because standards and requirements vary, you will not be able to become registered through the professional registration provider unless you meet their eligibility criteria.

Obtaining an overseas professional registration is a time-consuming and sometimes costly process. You should only apply for one if you are certain you want to work in a specific profession in a particular country/state/province.

Collating all the required information for your overseas professional registration application can be a time-consuming and complex process. The $125 administration fee covers:

  • Time required for research and collation of the necessary information (including obtaining written statements from academic staff, accessing archived records etc. as required)
  • Copying and storing of documentation
  • Registered postage of the application and supporting documents to the overseas professional registration provider and the graduate

Please note: The non-negotiable $125 fee applies to all applications and is not dependent on the amount of documentation required.

Collating all the required information for your overseas professional registration can be a time-consuming and complex process. It usually requires input from multiple areas of the University, preparation of official documents, and sometimes retrieval of archived information. Because of this, most Overseas Professional Registration applications take six weeks to complete.

Yes, a copy of these will be sent to you when the original documents are sent to the person/organisation nominated in the overseas professional registration provider application form. Where the registration provider's form indicates the documents must be sent to the graduate, you will receive the original documents for forwarding on to the registration provider and a copy for your records.

You will need to submit a new Verification for Professional Registration request, including payment of the $125 administration fee.
