Former Chancellor of the University of Adelaide the Honourable John von Doussa AO QC will be presented with the University's highest honour at next week's graduation ceremonies.

Mr von Doussa will be awarded the degree of Doctor of the University by current Chancellor the Honourable Robert Hill, at the ceremony on Wednesday 28 September at 10am, for his distinguished service to the University of Adelaide.

Mr von Doussa was Chancellor of the University of Adelaide from July 2004 to July 2010. He graduated in law from the University of Adelaide in 1962 and has had a long and distinguished legal and judicial career, including being President of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission from 2003 to 2008.

"During his time as Chancellor his strong inclusive leadership, commitment to the principles of equity and community, and his status locally, nationally and internationally proved invaluable to the University," said University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor James McWha.

During the graduation ceremonies, the University will also present Distinguished Alumni Awards to two notable graduates:

  • Mr Barry Grear AO (B Tech (Electrical Engineering) 1967), former President of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations and Chairman of the State Emergency Relief Fund, in recognition of his leadership to the engineering profession and significant contribution to emergency services organisations - Tuesday 27 September, 2.30pm;

  • The Honourable Justice Catherine Branson QC (BA 1977, LLB 1970), President of the Australian Human Rights Commission and Human Rights Commissioner, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Australian law and human rights - Wednesday 28 September, 10am.

More than 1,000 new graduates will attend five graduation ceremonies from Monday 26 September to Wednesday 28 September.

The graduating students will hear from guest speakers Mr Darryl Gobbett, Chief Economist, Prescott Securities Ltd; Dr Michael Llewellyn-Smith, urban management consultant and Adelaide City Council Area Councillor; Professor Don Bursill, Chief Scientist for South Australia; Associate Professor Bassam Dally, Head of the School of Mechanical Engineering; and the Hon. John von Doussa.
