About
The Centre of Light for Life pioneers research into advanced optical technologies with profound potential to unlock the complexities of biological, physical and environmental systems.
Our Vision
Using light to measure, probe, and understand the natural world, and translate this into real-world impact.
Our Purpose
By illuminating the intricate processes of life, we strive to expand the frontiers of knowledge, enhance human health, deepen environmental understanding, and empower global scientific innovation.
Our Mission
- Harness the power of light to develop and advance cutting-edge optical technologies, enabling transformative discoveries in biology, wine science, plant research, environmental studies, agriculture, and fundamental physics.
- Through interdisciplinary collaboration, we aim to deepen our understanding of life, foster innovation, contribute to health, sustainability, and resilience for communities both locally and globally.

Our technologies
The centre provides specialised light-based technologies such as light sheet microscopy, optical trapping, sensing (Raman spectroscopy) and digital holographic microscopy. Our technologies are rapidly expanding, with many actively used in current research projects across multiple disciplines.
Our space
The centre’s multidisciplinary nature spans a diversity of sciences, including physics, optics, reproductive biology, medicine, agriculture, and neurobiology. Our research has connections with industry, agriculture, and defence.
