Travel Grants

Indigenous Travel Assistance Grants

To support faculties and divisions with strategies and performance indicators relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff capacity building, retention and international obligations, as outlined in:

the University of Adelaide is offering four annual, individual Travel Assistance Grants.

Complementing the Taplin Bursary, the grants funded through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy and administered by the Division of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice-President (Academic) will contribute to your faculty's/division's co-investment and offers financial assistance valued at up to $2,500.

Grant applications will be considered by a committee comprising of

  • A faculty representative,
  • Executive Officer, Indigenous Research & Education Strategy, and
  • the Dean of Indigenous Research & Education Strategy.
  • Criteria
    1. Applicants must be of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, who regard themselves as Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and whom are also considered by the community in which they live or have lived; and
    2. Applicants must have signed approval from relevant Head/Dean of School/Director that should certify the proposed conference/travel is consistent with their workplace Strategic Plan and outlines area co-investment.
    3. Applicants who have not previously taken conference leave may be given priority.
    4. Applicant track records relative to opportunity or hampered by special circumstances may be considered.
    5. Recipients must use the Grants for the following purposes only:
      1. to attend an international conference or visit to relevant international centre to investigate issues of relevance to Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples; and
      2. for legitimate costs associated with travel to the centre or conference, including airfares, accommodation and program expenses.
      3. for travel in the same year as the grant is awarded. In special circumstances the Dean, Indigenous Education may approve otherwise.

    7. Staff undertaking any international travel must complete a travel dairy declaration form to eliminate potential Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT) (see

Recipients are required to submit a 2 page travel/conference report through their respective Head/Dean of School/Director and to the Dean, Indigenous Research & Education Strategy within one month of return from travel and present their travel experiences to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staffing cohort.
