Karnkanthi Indigenous Education Program orientation

On Friday the 25th of January, Wirltu Yarlu held the 2019 Karnkanthi Indigenous Education Program Orientation.

At the event, Karnkanthi students had the opportunity to meet and get to know each other, meet the Wirltu Yarlu staff, have a tour of The University of Adelaide campus, and meet each of their subject tutors.

The students put on a brave face as they carried out ‘getting to know you’ activities in front of their families. Many of our students are new to the Karnkanthi program this year and have never met each other. It is important to make such connections so that they can build on the relationships throughout the year and make steadfast connections for when they begin at university.

The students were introduced to all staff at Wirltu Yarlu so that, when they arrive at The University of Adelaide as tertiary students, they know whom to contact for support. By seeing a friendly face or two, the transition into university can seem a bit less daunting.

These activities were followed with a campus tour so that the Karnkanthi students and their families could familiarise themselves with the setting here at the University.

The last activity for the day saw the students meet up with their subject tutors for the semester. This was a vibrant and busy affair, with students rushing to talk with each tutor. They were able to talk through their queries and concerns in a one-on-one setting. These face-to-face meetings are essential for the success of the tutoring program as our students get to know the people who will be supporting them.

The afternoon was a great success, with positive feedback given from both students and their families.

We look forward to the upcoming events for 2019!
