Community update: Iran — Israel conflict

Within our community, there are individuals with strong connections to the Middle East region, and some who may have family and friends directly affected by the current conflict. The current escalating situation, which involves violent events and loss of life, will be particularly distressing for them.

Support is available to all students through Student Counselling. For outside-of-business hours support, please contact the University Crisis Line: call 1300 167 654 or text +61 488 884 197. International Students can also reach out to International Student Support.

I encourage you to make use of these services if you feel they would be of assistance.

It is important that our campuses remain a safe and inclusive space for all members of our community to work and study during these difficult times. All of us have an obligation to behave in a way that fosters a respectful learning and working environment free from all forms of discrimination, harassment, and incitement to hatred. When expressing views on the conflict, language that could be viewed as discriminatory, inciting hatred, or engaging in racial vilification should not be used.

The Council of the University of Adelaide has recently reaffirmed its commitment to combating all forms of discrimination, including those based on religion, race, nationality, and national and ethnic origins. This commitment is central to fostering an inclusive and respectful University community.

Concerns about any behaviour that causes an individual to feel unsafe at the University can be reported to the University’s Integrity Unit. This includes reports about harassment, discrimination or any other unacceptable behaviour. Information about reporting options and support services available to staff and students is available on the Safer Campus Community website.

These events are shocking and sad, and I encourage all members of our University community to be particularly mindful to take care of each other during this time.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President
