University Preparatory Program

The Wirltu Yarlu University Preparatory Program (UPP) is a program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) students offered by Wirltu Yarlu.

  • The UPP is a one-year program of full-time study.
  • Students may exit, or be advised to withdraw, before or after 6 months depending on student progress and results.
  • Students are required to take four UPP courses or alternatively, a student may choose to take one mainstream course in conjunction with three UPP courses depending on ability and successful progress.

The four UPP courses offered each semester are:

  • Indigenous Studies A and B,  
  • Studies in Humanities A and B,
  •  Aboriginal Knowledges A and B,  and  
  • Social Sciences A and B.

These courses are designed to introduce students to a range of disciplines associated with the social sciences. Students will gain skills in critical thinking, methodologies, research, analytical and research skills.

This program is Fee Free and a HECS debt will not be accumulated.

  • The Application Process

    All applicants sit an assessment to evaluate their learning requirements for entry to the UPP. The selection process is held in early December and late January every year, and in late June for mid-year applicants. For students entering mainstream courses, staff of Faculties may sit on the selection panels. Applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of the selection process.

  • The University Year

    The University year consists of two semesters, with each semester of 12 weeks duration. The first semester starts in early March and the second starts in late July.

  • Costs

    There are no HECS–HELP Higher Education Loan Program fees associated with this program.

  • Abstudy

    Abstudy is available to eligible UPP students. Abstudy Link to external website is an income tested financial assistance scheme for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students undertaking studies at universities and TAFE institutes.

  • Scholarships

    There are a number of scholarships available to assist Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students with the costs of their studies at University. Centrelink also provides Start-Up Scholarships Link to external website for successful applicants to the University.

  • Student Support

    Wirltu Yarlu provides students with a variety of facilities and services including: Wirltu Yarlu Tutoring Program, assistance and advice with academic and personal concerns, a student common room, computer suites and study areas, photocopier and printer.   • Wirltu Yarlu Tutorial Program

    The Wirltu Yarlu Tutorial Program offers ATSI students tutors to assist with their studies. This service is free of charge to the student. Wirltu Yarlu administers this scheme at the University with experienced tutors able to assist in all of the Preparatory Program courses.
