Sanjeev Gupta

Executive Chairman and CEO of GFG Alliance

Sanjeev Gupta is an international businessman and entrepreneur, heading the GFG Alliance – a global enterprise with activities spanning steel and aluminium production, mining, engineering, power generation, infrastructure, banking, property and commodities trading, as well as education and skills.

As Executive Chairman, he leads a fast-growing $13.1 billion worldwide industrial group, headquartered in London, with additional global hubs in Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong and Sydney, and a presence in over 30 countries.

He is also the co-founder of the GFG Foundation, a charitable organisation that is focused on safeguarding and re-growing industrial and manufacturing skills across the globe.

 

Hon Dan van Holst Pellekaan, SA Minister for Energy & Mining

The Hon Dan van Holst Pellekaan MP

South Australian Minister for Energy and Mining

Minister van Holst Pellekaan was elected to Parliament as the Member for Stuart in 2010. He was promoted to the Shadow Cabinet in 2011 and has held the Energy and Mining portfolios since June 2014. After his re-election at the 2018 State Election, he was sworn in as Minister for Energy and Mining in the Marshall Liberal Government.  

Minister van Holst Pellekaan started his working life as a labourer before playing in the National Basketball League whilst gaining a Bachelor of Economics.  He then spent ten years with BP Australia before entering the small business sector as a shareholder and operator of Outback roadhouses for seven years.  This was followed by three years developing cycle tourism in the Southern Flinders Ranges immediately before entering Parliament.

Minister van Holst Pellekaan’s electorate extends from Kapunda at its southern end, up to the NT border. It includes the Mid North agricultural region, all of the Flinders Ranges and the vast north-east pastoral region.

Raphael Costa

Raphael Costa, Hydro Bauxite & Alumina

Raphael Costa is currently the Technology Director for the Bauxite & Alumina division of Norsk Hydro Brasil and has more than 30 years experience in the alumina industry. He is the president of the Companhia de Alumina do Para (CAP) alumina refinery project, a member of the bauxite mine Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN) board of directors and a member of the bauxite mine Paragominas (MPSA) board of directors. Previously working for Alcoa, he has held technical and managerial positions in Brazil, US, Spain and Australia.

Alastaire Dick

Alastaire Dick, Rocky Mountain Institute

Alastaire Dick is Director of Rocky Mountain Institute’s Mining Program - Sunshine for Mines. He focuses on driving renewable energy transition in the global mining industry towards 8GW of on-site capacity by 2025. Highlights of this work include integrating 40MW of solar PV at Gold Fields South Deep mine in South Africa, modeling optimized renewables solutions for mines from development through operations to closure, developing renewables screening tools and advising mines on energy and decarbonization strategies.

Lawrence Hooey

Lawrence Hooey, Swerea MEFOS

Lawrence Hooey has 25 years of experience in research and development the iron and steel industry in Sweden and Finland both in industry and institutes. He has worked on the European ULCOS project and other carbon dioxide mitigation projects. He joined Swerea MEFOS in 2009 where his main focus has been on climate mitigation projects for the steel industry including CCS and CCU.

Asem Mousa

Asem Mousa, BHP

Asem is a Principal at the Low Emission Technology Program, BHP. In this role, Asem focuses on identifying and de-risking technology options/solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the business. In particular, his interest is in exploring emerging technologies with potential material impact on GHG emissions in the medium to long term horizons. Prior to joining BHP, Asem started his career as a research scientist at the CSIRO, before moving to a management consultant role, specialising in technology management and valuation services.

Gus Nathan

Gus Nathan, Centre for Energy Technology

Gus Nathan is the founding Director of The University of Adelaide’s Centre for Energy Technology and recipient of a Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award from the Australian Research Council. He specialises in research supporting the development of innovative technology in concentrating solar thermal, combustion and gasification technologies, together with their hybrids. He has worked closely with industry throughout his career and holds 10 patents.

Phil O'Neil

Phil O'Neil, Advisian

Phil is a Senior Associate in the Advisian Energy Strategy group in Asia Pacific.  In his 22 year career, he has worked with a range of industrial and government customers developing policy, strategic and technical approaches for New Energy solutions, energy efficiency, carbon abatement and sustainability.  Phil has worked across a range of industries including oil and gas, electricity generation and networks, pulp and paper, food processing, minerals, metals and chemicals and is currently involved in a number of green hydrogen projects in Australia and internationally.

Onozaki Masaki

Masaki Onozaki, The Institute of Applied Energy

Masaki Onozaki is a Senior Fellow of The Institute of Applied Energy, an independent and non-profit think tank on energy issues, founded under the auspices of METI to contribute to technology development on energy issues for the future. After 20 years experience in coal conversion technologies and heavy oil desulfurization and hydrogenation technologies, he has been managing a section creating energy strategy and the development of new energy-related technologies in the field of fossil fuel.

Christian Sattler

Christian Sattler, German Aerospace Center (DLR)

Christian Sattler is head of Solar Chemical Engineering at the DLR's Institute of Solar Research and Professor at the Technical University of Dresden. The focus of his work is the production of fuels, especially hydrogen, by solar thermo- and photochemical processes. He also works on high temperature processes for the production of metals, sulfuric acid and cement. He is VP of the Asc. Hydrogen Europe Research and the national representative for tasks under the IEA’s SolarPACES and Hydrogen Implementing Agreements.

Ellen Stechel

Ellen Stechel, Arizona State University: Lightworks

Ellen B Stechel is Co-Director, ASU LightWorks; Professor of Practice, Molecular Sciences; and Senior Sustainability Scientist, Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability. She has built research programs at a national laboratory, in the automotive industry and at a U.S. government agency. Her current research focuses on materials and systems design for concentrating solar technologies to produce sustainable liquid hydrocarbon fuels from carbon dioxide and water.

Masa Suenaga

Masa Suenaga, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation

Masa Suenaga has 30 years experience in procurement of steelmaking raw materials for Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC). Before taking his current role as MD of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Australia, an investment vehicle of NSSMC in February 2017, he was a chief negotiator of metallurgical coal contracts for NSSMC in Tokyo. Now based in Sydney, he is responsible for one iron ore project and six coal projects in Australia.

Ildo Agnetti

Ildo Agnetti, CMI (Cockerill Maintenance & Ingénierie)

Ildo has been working for the last 7 years as a development engineer for CMI Solar which designs solar thermal receivers for concentrated solar power plants (CSP/STE). CMI Solar is specialized in the design of molten salts solar receivers, enabling solar power dispatchability and enabling 24/7 electricity production. More recently, Ildo has been working on high temperature solar receivers and the use of CSP technology for industrial end-users.

 

Peter Ashman

Peter Ashman, University of Adelaide

Peter Ashman is Professor of Chemical Engineering, Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences and also a senior member of the Centre for Energy Technology with more than 20 years’ experience in thermal energy. His expertise spans the fields of biomass utilisation, biofuels and bioenergy, including the integration of solar thermal energy into a range of thermal processes (e.g. gasification of solid fuels).

Ray Chatfield

Ray Chatfield, Alcoa

Ray Chatfield is the Global Technical Manager for Energy at Alcoa’s six alumina refineries, with 30 years experience in the alumina industry. He currently manages energy efficiency initiatives and the Energy Community of Best Practice. He has made a significant impact on the energy efficiency of the new Ma’aden alumina refinery in Saudi Arabia and Alcoa’s refinery in San Ciprian. He has also investigated alternative energy options including renewables for most of Alcoa’s refineries.

Ros DeGaris

Ros DeGaris, Consultant

Ros’ industrial experience spans more than 30 years of heavy manufacturing, mainly in operations with cement and lime production at Adelaide Brighton’s Birkenhead Works and at a national company level for Environment and Sustainability, implementing the changing legislation around Climate Change, energy and greenhouse gas accounting and reduction. She has worked with the Cement Industry Federation and the National Lime Association. Ros has continued to participate in industry actions on energy and sustainability performance through her consultancy. 

Glynn Ellis

Glynn Ellis, Redback Energy

Currently Chief Business Development Officer, Private VPP Manager (Redback Energy); Glynn Ellis has over 20 years’ international experience in successful new business delivery. He initiated and led several businesses and large teams for Shell International and was part of a core team that assessed the global transitions of Urbanisation and Renewable Energy. Glynn led business strategy and developed and delivered a portfolio of Renewable Energy business opportunities (hybrid gas, solar, wind, battery, fuel cells power systems) for Australia and Asia, including > 600 MW utility-scale solar projects for Queensland.

Michiel Freislich

Michiel Freislich, Liberty Primary Steel

With the acquisition of Arrium by GFG Alliance, an new era commenced at Whyalla. Michiel joined the team to drive the transformation in the asset base for the steelworks. A key part of this transformation is the application of advanced techniques and processes to reduce energy costs and carbon footprint for the production of iron and steel, and Michiel is keen to include these in the technology selection at the site.  Before joining Liberty Primary Steel, Michiel worked for  25 years’ in the energy, mining and metals industries where he gained experience in alternative technologies and advanced engineering techniques. 

Ross Haywood

Ross Haywood, Hatch

Ross Haywood is the global leader of the Specialised Engineering Analysis and Design (SEAD) group for Hatch. He has 28 years experience as a mechanical engineer with technical specialisation in fluid mechanics, process heat transfer, and combustion. Experience with a wide variety of metallurgical, combustion, and chemical process unit-operations, including reactors, furnaces, conventional and new ironmaking technologies, heat recovery systems, steam generators, gas handling systems, and rotating equipment.  

Stuart Hutchings

Stuart Hutchings, Boral

Operations Manager with Boral Australia with responsibility for the Berrima Cement Plant. The plant in NSW is Boral's largest manufacturing operation producing 1.5M tonne/annum cement clinker. Stuart has extensive international experience in the operation of high temperature minerals processing, particularly in the cement industry where he has held senior roles in Blue Circle Cement, Lafarge,Tarmac and Boral. Stuart has a strong belief that cement plants have a key place in the circular economy  where they can be used to recycle waste materials in the process of making a high quality construction material essential for development.

Tatsuya Kodama

Tatsuya Kodama, Niigata University

Tatsuya Kodama is a professor at Niigata University and has worked in the field of concentrating solar thermo-chemistry for the past twenty years, building up considerable expertise in high-temperature solar chemistry. His research centres around: solar thermo-chemical two-step water-splitting for the production of hydrogen;  solar methane reforming for solar-hybrid synthetic gas production and solar coal gasification for solar-hybrid synthetic gas production. He has authored over 100 research papers and has a number of international patents.

Robbie McNaughton

Robbie McNaughton, CSIRO

Robbie McNaughton is the team leader for the CSIRO Solar Thermal Processes team. His work over the past 19 years has included solar fuels processes, steam and mixed reforming for syngas and hydrogen production, supercritical steam systems, solar brayton cycles, high temperature thermal storage and most recently the development of a solar thermal supercritical CO2 recuperated loop. He has expertise in managing large research projects with international collaborators and delivering innovative solutions.

Jordan Parham

Jordan Parham, FCT Combustion

Jordan is a highly accomplished engineer and manager with extensive research and corporate experience in organisations servicing the energy and resource sectors. He is currently CEO of FCT Combustion’s Asia-Pacific operations, having previously held roles of Engineering Manager and Combustion Engineer. FCT is a combustion and process specialist company that delivers custom designed combustion solutions and heat transfer equipment. .

Vikram Singh

Vikram Singh, AGIG (Australian Gas Infrastructure Group)

Vikram is leading the decarbonisation strategy at AGIG and delivering the largest power to gas project in Australia, where renewable hydrogen will be blended with natural gas and injected into the South Australian gas distribution network. Prior to AGIG, Vikram was a partner at Deloitte Australia and specialised in the energy and utilities sector advising leading energy companies and government agencies on M&A transactions, electricity and gas wholesale and retail markets, network reform, privatisation, renewables and decarbonisation.

Dietmar Tourbier

Dietmar Tourbier, CSIRO

Dietmar Tourbier works at CSIRO and is the Director of the Australian Solar Thermal Research Institute (ASTRI). Prior to joining CSIRO, he worked at General Electric (GE) for over 20 years and held various leading positions in corporate research including the leadership roles of GE’s solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) division in California, the global power electronics technology research group and the GE’s European research team.

Ivar Valstad

Ivar Valstad, Hydro Energi AS

Ivar Valstad leads Norsk Hydro’s Centre of Excellence Greener. He is responsible for developing strategies and solutions to lower carbon emissions from Norsk Hydro’s value chain. In addition, he is part of Norsk Hydro’s Business Development New Technologies team that builds and invests in new business opportunities emerging from the ongoing transition of energy systems. His background includes strategy and sustainability consulting to several major energy companies as well as R&D and commercial roles in the offshore oil and gas industry.

Habib Zughbi

Habib Zughbi, BlueScope

Habib Zughbi started his career as a process engineer with Exxon Mobil and Caltex Oil refining before joining CSIRO. 12 years as an associate professor at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals  followed. He joined BlueScope in 2006 as a senior research engineer. Habib's research interests include mathematical modeling and simulations of fluid flow, heat and mass transfer in single and multi-phases, applications of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to industrial applications, minimization of energy consumption and CO2 emissions using process modeling and process integration, and recycling of by-product materials.

John Burgess

John Burgess

John  began his career with BHP as a researcher in blast furnace ironmaking.  He later became Group General Manager Research and then Vice President Safety, Environment and Technology, sitting on the global Management Committee and Capital Investment Committee of the company.  Later, he set up a consultancy and undertook several studies on low carbon electricity generation. He is currently the invited Chair of the CSIRO Energy Advisory Committee.
