Annual KOALA / ANZCOP Practice Session: 2025 Winners Announced

Professor Kishan Dholakia awarded SA Scientist of the Year 2025!
Professor Kishan Dholakia, Director of the Centre of Light for Life and a leader in structured light and precision measurement, has been named the 2025 South Australian Scientist of the Year. Presented by Chief Scientist for South Australia Professor Craig Simmons, the award recognises Kishan’s influential contributions across photonics, biology and quantum science, and the collaborative approach that underpins his work.

Atom Trap Trace Analysis Lab Update
The University of Adelaide’s Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA) facility is fully operational, processing samples and open to new collaborations. The ATTA team is now welcoming research and commercial partnerships across government, industry, and academia. This is the first ATTA facility in the Southern Hemisphere. It allows scientists to measure rare noble gas isotopes like krypton-81 and 85 at parts per trillion, unlocking a completely new way to date, trace, and manage groundwater.
PsiQuantum Visits the University of Adelaide to meet SA Quantum Photonics Community
On 7–8 October, IPAS welcomed Dylan Saunders and Milena Arsenijevic from PsiQuantum Australia to the University of Adelaide. PsiQuantum is working on a bold mission: building large-scale, useful quantum computers. During their visit, Dylan and Milena engaged with both academic and industry audiences, including targeted meetings with local photonics companies, research teams and the ARC Training Centre Qu-Tech.
A/Prof Jiawen Li featured in the Australian Medical Association SA’s magazine
The Australian Medical Association SA’s magazine features A/Prof Li and the Bioengineering Imaging group in “Personalising Heart Health Through a 3D-Printed Micro-Lens,” highlighting their innovative work on a device designed to better assess coronary artery disease and support earlier prevention.

IPAS Researcher Contributes to Advances in Energy-Efficient Photonic Processing
IPAS is pleased to highlight the latest publication involving Dr Lisa Haerteis, part of A/P Andy Boes’ Photonic Integrated Circuits team, as well as the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS). The research explores ways to improve the efficiency and compactness of microwave photonic processors, which support high-speed communications, sensing and the growing demands of data-intensive technologies.

Sachin Kumar wins Third Place in the Visualise Your Thesis competition!
Sachin Kumar, a student in Prof Heike Ebendorff-Heidepriem's Photonics Materials group in IPAS, won Third Place in the Visualise Your Thesis competition at the University of Adelaide. His video, "What if Your Thoughts Could Glow?", showcases the amazing future applications of new sensing technologies.
