Celebrating CET Research Day 2025

CET Research Day 2025

ISER was proud to sponsor another fabulous celebration of the research conducted by students, staff and collaborators of the Centre for Energy Technology (CET), at it’s annual CET Research Day held yesterday at the Sanctuary Function Centre, Adelaide Zoo.

The program was opened by Prof Greg Metha, Acting CET Director, who discussed some future directions for the centre, followed by Interim ISER Director Prof Gus Nathan, who talked about emerging opportunities for accelerating decarbonisation.

The program was divided into the following three topics:

  • Sustainable Resources
  • Sustainable Energy and Fuels
  • Sustainable Industry

Special thanks to our industry and government presenters, Matt Dixon from Adbri, Angus Mitchell from the Department of Energy and Mining and Dr Russell Crosbie from the CSIRO. Thanks also to our university research collaborators: Prof Kannan Govinden, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Operations and Supply Chain Resilience; Dr Richmond Asamoah, Prof Ke Xing and Prof Glenn Toogood from the University of South Australia; and Niels Rytter and Simon Rytter from the University of Southern Denmark, as well as CET and ISER researchers, Dr Katelyn Ngo, Dr Rachelle Kernen, Dr Jingrun Ran and PhD student Thomas Anthony for your thought provoking presentations.

The CET would also like to thank session chairs Ros De Garis, Dave Holland and Rachelle Doyle, all members of the CET Advisory Board, who helped to keep the day running smoothly.

This year PhD students were given two minutes to present their posters on stage, as well as talking to judges and attendees during lunch and tea breaks. Judging for best poster awards was a mixture of assessment by a panel of academic and industry experts, along with a popular vote from attendees. The CET thanks all students, who took part in the competition and for the lively discussions that were held during the breaks. Congratulations to our 2025 CET Research Day Poster Award winners as follows:

  • The Best Poster in the Category of Sustainable Resources went to Nikhil Kirti for his presentation on ‘Effect of heating rates on the calcination of kaolinite clay: a kinetic and morphological study’.
  • The Best Poster in the Category of Sustainable Energy and Fuels went to Sam Harris for his presentation on ‘Fundamental behaviours of Hydrogen Flames with Oxy-Steam’.
  • The Best Poster in the Category of Sustainable Industry went to Renae O’Hara for her presentation on ‘High-Flux radiation-driven beneficiation of low grade Iron Ore: Impact on separation performance and grinding energy’.

In addition to best poster awards, the CET continued its long custom of recognising and celebrating the research work of PhD and early-to-mid career researchers, with the CET Research Awards that were granted as follows:

  • Talib Rahman and Xiaopeng ‘Gavin’ Bi received awards for the Best Contribution to Research Quality (PhD).
  • Renae O’Hara and Yuecheng Lin received commendations for the Best Contribution to Research Quality (PhD).
  • Dr Aqib Chishty and Dr Amit Katoch received awards for the Best Contribution to Research Quality (ECR/MCR).
  • Cherry Nguyen received an award for Best Contribution to Clean Energy Technology Development.
  • Dr Gule Li and Peijun Guo received Best CET Team Player Awards.
  • Yilong Yin and Xinchen ‘Matthew’ Zhang received commendations for Best CET Team Player.

The CET congratulates all prize recipients for their hard work and achievement!

Professor Greg Metha said that he was excited by the level of participation in Research Day 2025 and the excellence of the research being celebrated by the Centre and its supporters.
