Deputy Vice-Chancellor's message

For 50 years the University of Adelaide has produced Lumen magazine. To celebrate that anniversary and to reflect the ever-evolving nature of our institution, we have refreshed the look and content and given it a special theme – sustainability.
That special issue is available online today and I encourage you to read it. You will also be able to pick up printed copies around campus soon.
Our cover features alumna Tiahni Adamson, winner of the University’s Tirkapena Indigenous Award 2022. Tiahni’s life now involves a strong focus on sustainability, including her work with a seaweed which can help reduce methane production when fed to ruminant livestock.
A more sustainable future is a global imperative, and having just launched our Sustainability Strategy, it is fitting this issue examines how we at the University are playing our part to make a difference.
We highlight significant research from across all faculties, including the Institute of Sustainability, Energy and Resources (ISER), the Environment Institute and the Waite Research Institute.
We also examine our own sustainability credentials as an institution and offer ways we can all help. The food we eat, what we drink, the movies we watch, and the pets we own are all discussed.
The current Lumen also introduces special new features – including book and wine reviews, new writing, music, and colourful display of vibrant life on campus. And we celebrate the work and achievements of alumni, staff and students in Australia and around the world.
Our message with this magazine is simple: at the University of Adelaide, we are actively engaged in the most pressing matters of our time, to Make History. These are your stories and the stories that we need to tell.
I hope you enjoy this special issue.
