EVENT: Rewilding the oceans: combining marine biology & technology, public & policy
The Environment Institute is pleased to present an engaging panel discussion on rewilding our oceans for the University of Adelaide's Ecoversity 2022 Sustainability Week.
Hear from experts on how the future of rewilding rests on combining science with technology, public use with education and policy making. We hope to see you there!
Background:
Rewilding is becoming the primary strategy for managing our severely depleted coasts as recognised by the ‘UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030’. Our expert panel will discuss South Australia’s historical legacy of lost coastal ecosystems which has been plundered since the time of the early European colonists. Yet, we now world leaders in restoring seagrass meadows (>5000 hectares) and reviving extinct oyster reefs (>1 kilometre-long ribbon reef). This future for rewilding rests on combining science with technology, enabling public use with education and energising policy-making. For these reasons, the panel consists of a marine biologist from The University of Adelaide, a marine technologist and educator from AusOceans, a public-environmentally centred NGO from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and a policy-maker from the Department of Environment and Water. Together, these people are linked in their activities that are successfully reviving the lost oyster reefs form extinction.
