Executive Dean's message

An aspiration to be the beating heart of Adelaide is part of our university’s strategic plan and there are many ways that we contribute to the vibrant life of the city. The crowds of people and families enjoying the Illuminate Festival installations on our North Terrace campus during the past couple of weeks is evidence of this.

Our University is a dynamic participant in the broader South Australian society and contributes significantly to the arts and exciting calendar of events in our city. We play an important role in the cultural landscape and each year build on our legacy of what we have done before, while always looking ahead to the future.

In recent weeks there have been a number of activities that members of our University community have been involved in that have brought the past and future together in creative and innovative ways.

I’d like to recognise the great work of Grayson Rotumah from the Elder Conservatorium of Music and CASM in bringing together ancient and modern cultures. His new work ‘Creation’ was premiered earlier this month by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. This highly innovative work reflects Bundjalung history and culture and is a great example of how important research and engagement is.

Last week the Pathway to Politics program was officially launched in South Australia. This program aims to encourage more South Australian women to enter politics and is delivered in SA by the University as part of a national initiative. Women interested in learning more about entrepreneurial leadership are also being supported by ThincLab’s ThincHer program which is launching in early August.

Our capability in research, teaching and expertise within the humanities and social sciences – and right across the Faculty of ABLE – is a great strength of our University. It is through disciplines such as philosophy, law and the creative arts that we better understand and make sense of the advances and outputs of our STEM and health colleagues.
