Vice-Chancellor's message

Professor Peter Hoj

This has been a year of many highlights and I want to take the opportunity to thank all staff for your many contributions throughout the year. The hard work and commitment to deliver our core business and get us in good shape as we head towards Day One of Adelaide University is astounding, and I am very grateful for that.

Throughout 2024 we have celebrated our 150th with a program of activities and partnerships that engaged with over 1.4 million staff, students, donors, alumni and members of the wider community.

With events including the inaugural Kaurna Day, the Waite 100 Gala, intangible #form with Illuminate Adelaide, Wonderverse and AdeLOUD, we truly celebrated making history.

At this time of the year, award ceremonies around the University recognise and celebrate staff excellence in many different professions. For those of you who were nominated for and/or received awards this year: congratulations. Your success is inspiring, and encourages each of us to do better.

Indeed, one of the many great things about working in a university is mixing with a breadth of talented people whose expertise spans many different disciplines and professions. I find it inspirational, as I know others do too.

Our work makes a difference to people’s lives. This year saw over 11,500 commencing students join our University community, including the largest cohort of international commencing students in our institution’s history. Over 7,400 students had their degrees conferred this year, well-prepared to make a difference in their chosen professions, and join our global alumni family of 170,000 people across 148 countries.

Our combined efforts, yet again, demonstrate very clearly that together we can achieve great things. They also demonstrate that we are deeply committed to preparing to be the very best university that we can be, and are able to deftly develop innovative solutions to the challenges and opportunities we face.

This is the final issue of Staff News for 2024, as we head towards a well-deserved break at the end of the month. I extend to you all my best wishes for a safe, happy and revitalising festive season with loved ones, and thank you again for all that you do for this fine institution.
