A reliance on caffeine

A coffee on a table

What used to be one cup of coffee a day has turned into two or three – do I need to change my habits?

It seems most citizens of our modern society take part in a ritualized caffeine consumption that accompanies social gatherings and business meetings and morning routines. Put simply, heck, why do we all just drink coffee? It is this weird unspoken thing almost like drinking culture - the expectation that you will partake.

That is what first got me onto coffee. Shhh, it made me feel like I was adulting right. But in reflection I am realizing how much of a mindless habit it has become.

Tired? Coffee. Long meeting? Coffee. Catch up? You guessed it, coffee!

And it takes up soooo much money and resources. I have somehow abandoned the three keep cups I keep in the cupboard so that their accusatory gazes don’t fill me with guilt. I will just grab a coffee to go and *pfft* there goes $4. It really isn’t a sustainable habit for my pocket or my health.

I find myself more sluggish and reliant on coffee particularly when I haven’t had some in a while. It makes me uncomfortable thinking I am dependent on anything. So with exams finally over, I am trying out a caffeine ‘detox’ of a sorts. I am exploring herbal teas and the magic of *gasp* water!

So I am prepared for a few cranky days and cravings but hell, here is to overcoming bad habits!
