Managing strategy is concerned with the long-term direction and performance of an organisation. This course draws on prior business and management studies to examine contemporary thinking in the field of strategy. Using case studies, the course aims to equip you with a practical understanding of the relevant concepts and frameworks needed to make better strategic decisions in the context of the dynamic and fast changing business and management environment. Students can expect to critically explore how the continuous and accurate analysis of essential strategic tasks and how internal and external environments interact are components of a successful strategy.

    Assessment 1a: Strategic analysis showcase: Multimedia presentation with audio commentary

    This assessment is designed to help you develop your critical thinking, analytical skills, and self-awareness, alongside your ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. For this task, you'll select one of two provided case studies covering different sectors. You'll be required to utilise the 13-step Case Study Method to analyse the selected case, synthesising key elements and connecting them to theories learned in class and external sources.

    The outcome will be a multimedia presentation with audio commentary, providing insights into the strategic management process and demonstrating effective communication skills, both orally and visually.

    Assessment 1b: Comprehensive strategic assessment: Written report

    This assessment aims to enhance your strategic management skills and self-awareness by asking you to perform a comprehensive strategic analysis of a selected business case in a written report format. You will choose from two case study options and apply the 13-step Case Study Method to conduct an in-depth analysis. The report should connect themes from the case to theories and concepts learned in class, supported by academic and practical sources.

    This task will assess your analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving, and academic writing skills, culminating in a report that provides actionable insights for strategic decision-making.

    Assessment 2: Strategic concept visualisation: Poster and analytical report

    This paired assessment consists of creating a poster (Assessment 2a) and an accompanying analytical report (Assessment 2b). You will independently research an organisation of your choice, understanding its strategic management process based on publicly available data.

    The poster should visually organise and link strategic concepts relevant to the chosen organisation, while the report will provide an analytical narrative that synthesises your research findings. This task aims to develop your ability to critically analyse strategic environments and apply theories, frameworks, and concepts learned in the course to real-world contexts

    Assessment 3: Executive strategy proposal and peer review

    This comprehensive assessment task is designed to evaluate your ability to apply strategic management theories and tools in a real-world context. You will work in groups to create a Board/CEO-level presentation that analyses the current strategic posture of Qantas and proposes a strategic roadmap for future initiatives. This task requires you to synthesise course learnings, external readings, and strategic comparisons to offer actionable recommendations for Qantas under the leadership of the new CEO, Vanessa Hudson.

    The assessment is twofold: firstly, crafting a presentation that provides a balanced analysis and practical recommendations (Assessment 3a), and secondly, engaging in a peer review process (Assessment 3b) where you will critically evaluate the contributions of your peers to the group task. This peer review process is integral to the assessment, as it impacts the individual grades of the presentation task, highlighting the importance of teamwork and individual contribution within a strategic business context.
    Submission
    Please note that all requests for extensions should be directed in writing no later than 48 hours before the due date. Extension requests after this time will only be granted for exceptional circumstances. This does not include poor time management or poor file management.

    All assignments must be lodged at or before the due date and time. A late assignment for which no extension has been granted will be penalised by a reduction of 5% of the mark given for each day or part of a day that it is late.
