Chief Operating Officer's message

Bruce Lines

The University is in the process of rejuvenating the Union House precinct to create a modern, welcoming, and vibrant space for our students, staff, and alumni and address underutilised spaces across the building.

Due to open in 2024, it includes upgrades and improvements to function rooms and event spaces and aims to enhance the student experience by becoming part of the new social heart of our North Terrace campus.

The project does, however, require the decommissioning of critical elements of the current Staff Club’s infrastructure. The Club needs to vacate its Union House space on Friday 26 May and will also cease the provision of catering services on North Terrace campus. The wide range of food, beverage and catering options offered through other campus venues and the National Wine Centre will still be available.

The closure of the current Staff Club space will be a loss to some members of the University community and there is a need to provide a contemporary place for staff, alumni and the wider community to socialise, entertain and collaborate. Accordingly, the refurbishment includes plans for an exciting new contemporary food and beverage offering on Level 5 that will welcome all staff, graduates and alumni. The venue is being designed by a group of University community members and the intention is that it will open in 2024.

The University of Adelaide Club has formed part of the fabric of our institution for over 50 years, bringing staff together in a social setting and providing a place for colleagues to meet, host guests and relax. The Club has also provided extensive function and catering support over many years for University events, including those held to celebrate important milestones and welcome honoured guests.

The University thanks the Club staff and board for the support and hospitality they have provided over many years.

Information regarding the design and vision for the Union House upgrade project is available on the Infrastructure website. Specific enquiries about the current operation of the Staff Club should be directed to the operators.
