Deputy Vice-Chancellor's message

Jessica Gallagher

Artificial intelligence, and how it will continue to impact us all, is a hot topic in our society. The Spring/Summer issue of Lumen – available online today – examines the good and the bad of AI.

In our special Lumen interview, Professor Simon Lucey, Director of our Australian Institute for Machine Learning, shares his insights into the challenges and opportunities ahead. We also examine the dangers of AI-driven misinformation and discuss how we are approaching the impact of AI at the University.

This issue also celebrates our alum Andy Thomas 50 years after his first graduation, and profiles the Children’s University as it turns 10. The University’s 150th celebrations are previewed, along with the centenary of the Waite bequest, as we prepare for a big year ahead.

Our wine reviewer, Associate Professor Sue Bastian, takes a fresh look at the evolution of Chardonnay and new World News and News in Brief sections are introduced, highlighting the impact our research and our people have at a state, national and global level.

This issue of Lumen also promotes our first ever Giving Day, which is coming up on Tuesday 31 October. This 24-hour fundraising challenge will focus on the positive impact philanthropy can have and encourages members of our community to make a gift of any size to the cause at the University they are most passionate about.

Giving Day activities are planned at North TerraceWaite and Roseworthy campuses. Look out for more details about how you can get involved in Staff News throughout October.

I hope you enjoy this new issue of Lumen.
