Deputy Vice-Chancellor's message

The start of semester one is such an important time for many of our students, especially those new to the University.
Over 7000 new international and domestic students attended orientation events last week across our campuses. O’Week activities, tours and giveaways provide a welcome introduction to all that campus life has to offer, and many opportunities to make connections.
O’Week, and the affiliated orientation activities that run until 9 March, are the product of extensive efforts of academic and professional colleagues, AU Sport, YouX, industry partners and many student and staff volunteers. On behalf of the University, I thank all of you for your hard work, dedication, resourcefulness and for your role in helping our students feel part of our university community.
I also want to acknowledge our exceptional staff who have just received 2023 Australian Awards for University Teaching for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. Congratulations to Associate Professor Michelle McArthur (Faculty of SET), Dr Walter Barbieri (Faculty of ABLE) and Dr Thomas Wanner (Faculty of ABLE).
These prestigious national awards, announced on 26 February by Universities Australia, recognise the impact that great educators have on the learning and teaching experiences and outcomes of students, and highlight the exceptional quality of education our students can expect from the University of Adelaide.
Finally, a reminder that everyone is welcome to attend Kaurna Day, Tirkanthi - Ngutu - Taikurrinthi (Learning - Knowledge - Be united together), with activities based at the Kaurna Learning Circle and the Barr Smith Lawns, 7 am – 4.30 pm today. Kaurna Day marks the official beginning of our 150th events program, and there’s plenty to explore and discover.
Our vibrant campuses, our talented and dedicated staff, and our diverse and enthusiastic student cohorts all provide a great sense of optimism for a special year ahead.
Professor Jennie Shaw
Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic)
